On Monday, the U.S. Naval Academy's freshman class successfully climbed the greased 6.4 meter Herndon Monument located on the academy's grounds.
The traditional challenge sees cadets attempt to replace a freshman 'plebe' Dixie cup hat on top of the pillar with an upperclassmen hat, marking the freshmen's official passage from first-year plebes to fourth-class midshipmen.
Dating back to 1950, the Herndon Climb sees plebes attempt to mount the heavily greased monument, in a show of perseverance, teamwork and ingenuity.
This year's class, which graduates in 2025, worked for three hours, 36 minutes and 58 seconds before successfully replacing the cap.
