K-pop album sales soar in 2021 to US$ 228 million Updated: 2022-01-16 12:12:51 KST

With the remarkable rise of K-pop into music charts around the world, Korea's exports of K-pop albums reached a new high last year, surpassing 220-million U.S. dollars, an increase from the year before of just over 62 percent.
This is according to customs data, which show that even in China, which has put restrictions on the dissemination of Korean culture, exports were up more than 2-and-a-half fold.
The biggest market was Japan, followed by China, the United States and Indonesia.
Of course, this growth in sales was led the rise of big groups like BTS and NCT, but also, experts say, because fans couldn't see their idols in person, and so they bought more of their albums instead.
