U.S. will move forward with reopening its Palestinian mission in Jerusalem: Blinken Updated: 2021-10-14 11:48:16 KST

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Wednesday, that the Biden administration plans to press ahead with its plan to reopen its Jerusalem consulate that traditionally engages with the Palestinians, despite strong opposition from Israel.
The announcement comes as Washington's top diplomat reiterated a pledge he originally made months ago to re-establish the consulate, which had long been a base of diplomatic outreach to the Palestinians before it was closed by former president Donald Trump.
However, speaking at a news conference with visiting foreign ministers of Israel and the UAE, Blinken stopped short of setting a date for the reopening.
The plans for reopening is part of the Biden administration's goal of repairing relations with the Palestinians, which have been badly damaged under the Trump administration.
The consulate was subsumed into the U.S. Embassy that was moved to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv back in 2018 by Trump.
The Biden administration added it will reopen the consulate while leaving the embassy in place.
