S. Korea's ruling DP to announce presidential nominee as primaries end Updated: 2021-10-10 12:57:03 KST

Now, we're looking forward this evening to an announcement from South Korea's Democratic Party in its presidential primary.
The presidential election is next March.
And having wrapped up those polls today, they should have enough of a count to announce a nominee.
Watching that race for us Arirang's Lee Kyung-eun, who's on the line right now.
Kyung-eun, has the Democratic Party announced their nominee?

Devin, the announcement is getting delayed.
But we will soon be hearing the results soon.
The question is whether the DP's front-runner, Gyeonggi-do Governor Lee Jae-myung, was able consolidate his dominant lead and put an end to the primaries with an outright victory.
Or whether former Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon who's been the runner-up so far gains enough votes to send the race into a runoff.

The decision will largely depend on two things.
First the results of today's regional primary in Seoul, which is last the last of 10 rounds open to party members.
And second the results of the third round of online voting among the public.
These votes will be added to the others taken previously to determine the final winner, who needs a simple majority.

So far, governor Lee Jae-myung has been winning ALL the regional primaries except for one.
And he's also won both previous rounds of the public vote.

Whoever becomes the nominee will prepare for the actual presidential race with the backing of party's central election committee.

The DP is the first major party to choose its candidate, and will be followed soon by the main opposition People Power Party on November 5th.
The actual presidential election is March 9th next year.
