The highly contagious variant discovered in the U.K. has become the most common COVID-19 strain circulating in the United States.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday, more than 16-thousand cases of the UK-based variant have been reported since it was first detected in December last year.
The remark comes as the CDC director hinted at the start of the fourth wave in the country, adding that testing remains an important strategy to rapidly identify and isolate infectious individuals.
The U.S. has over 30.8 million confirmed COVID cases, the most in the world, and leads the world in deaths as well at more than 556-thousand.
