S. Korea reports 346 new COVID-19 cases on Fri.; lowest daily cases in two months Updated: 2021-01-22 15:06:43 KST

South Korea reported 346 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, the country's lowest daily tally in two months.
314 were locally transmitted, mostly from the greater Seoul area.
At least 20 infections are linked to a sauna in Gangnam-gu District, and at least 1,220 cases are linked to Dongbu Detention Center in southeastern Seoul.
With cluster infections continuing to occur, health authorities reiterate the importance of quarantine measuresparticularly at religious facilities.

"In religious facilities where face-to-face worship services are resuming, please show exemplary adherence to quarantine measures. I'd like to remind you that aside from worship services all gatherings like dining, coffee breaks, bible studies are prohibited."

Health authorities also said the government is increasing its support for those with developmental disabilities in self-quarantine and their family members .

"Since February last year, the government has been dispatching 24-hour support care workers for those with developmental disabilities in self-quarantine. This year, if those with developmental disabilities do not wish to be taken care of by strangers, we'll allow a family member who is a qualified support worker to take care of them."

Meanwhile, Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency Commissioner, Jeong Eun-kyeong recently published a joint paper with a team from Hallym University College of Medicine which showed that very few COVID-19 cases are transmitted in school.
The report shows that out of 127 children and teenagers aged three to 18 who were infected between May 1st and July 12th last year, when in-person classes resumed, only around 2 percent were infected at school.
Ruling party leader Lee Nak-yeon on Friday asked the education and health authorities to find ways for school to begin, with preschoolers and low-grade elementary school students first.
