Japan to release contaminated Fukushima water into the sea: Reports Updated: 2020-10-18 09:08:32 KST

The Japanese government has reportedly decided to gradually release more than a million tons of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea.
Japanese media reports said the water would start to be released in October 2022 at the earliest, and would take decades to complete.
If so, this would end years of debate over how to dispose of the water used to cool the reactors that went into meltdown when the plant was hit by a massive tsunami in 2011.
There has been strong opposition to such plans, though, from environmental groups and from farmers and fishermen.
