A program led by the World Health Organization plans to secure antiviral drugs, such as Merck's experimental pill molnupiravir as part of efforts to ensure fair access to virus treatments.
Known as the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator, the program aims to deliver around one billion coronavirus tests to poorer countries along with drugs to treat up to 120 million patients.
To pay for the planned purchase, the program has asked the G20 and other donors for funding of 22.8 billion U.S. dollars.
So far, donors have pledged more than 18 billion dollars to support the program.
