South Korea's female population surpassed 25 million last year, an increase of 275-thousand, or one.one percentage point, from 2015
A survey of women aged 15 and older showed that the median age of marriage has also increased over the last 5 years.
It rose slightly from 24.2 years in 2015 to 24.6 years in 2020.
But those with a higher educational background were more likely to get married later in life.
Those who have completed a Bachelor's degree or higher have the highest median age of marriage at 27.1 years.
This is followed by women who have received high school education at 24.2 years and by those with middle school or lower education at 21.6 years.
On average, the age that a married woman gave birth to her first child was 25.7 yearsslightly up from 2015.
But the average number of births fell to 2.0-7 in 2020down from 2.1-9 five years ago.
And over the same period, the proportion of married women without children is also increasing.
The rate increased by almost two percentage points to 8.4 percent in 2020.
Statistics Korea expressed concern over the low birthrates.
"The country's fertility continues to decline, due to a decrease in the number of births and even with a rise in families without children. This can be seen as a serious situation, as more people do not have children and have little intention of giving birth."
Meanwhile, data also shows that more parents took care of their kids last year.
About 60 percent of children below the age of 12 were taken care of by their parents during the day, the highest figure in 15 years.
Statistics Korea explained this was partly due to restrictions on the use of facilities due to virus measures as well as due to concerns over COVID-19 infections.
