Reports say Pfizer's COVID-19 treatment pill cut hospitalization and deaths by 89 percent during clinical trials.
According to Pfizer on Friday, the pill named Paxlovid, is to be taken soon after symptoms arise.
The company says that it ended the trials early as the results were positive.
Pfizer plans to ask the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to authorize the drug's use this month.
A Pfizer Chief Scientific Officer says the company could deliver doses this year, should regulators give a thumbs-up.
U.S. President Joe Biden said earlier that the country has already secured millions of doses of this drug and that once approved, it would be rolled out to fight the ongoing pandemic.
