The city of Goyang is taking Taekwondo to new heights.
It's co-hosting, along with the Korea Taekwondo Association, the 2021 Taekwondo Education and Industry Show at the Korea International Exhibition Center this weekend.

"From taekwondo training equipment to fashionable uniforms and even sports massage tech, the convention has everything the industry has to offer."

"Our soundwave massage technology's already being used by athletes and trainers in the United States and Europe. It'd be nice to see our products prevent injuries in Korea also.. being used not only by members of the national team but also ordinary students."

Designed to save the national sport, which is reeling from the pandemic, the convention's a breath of fresh air, especially for taekwondo instructors and universities who've had their fair share of gym closures.

"Taekwondo's been struggling in a contactless world under the pandemic. The meaning behind this convention lies in reversing that trend."

Besides seminars and dozens of exhibition booths, also on display are virtual reality game consoles offering visitors a hands-on experience.
But above all, the convention's highlight is taekwondo itself.
On Saturday, elite demonstration teams showcased their high-flying kicks and acrobatic flips breaking wooden boards and mesmerizing those in attendance.
Among the VIPs present was leader of the Korea Taekwondo Association Yang Jin-bang, who expressed interest in the upcoming 2022 World Taekwondo Poomsae, or technique pattern, World Championships also to be held in Goyang.

"Next year, we'll try to take the convention beyond Korea and globalize it by hosting the event and the World Poomsae Championships together."

World Taekwondo, the sport's international governing body, is moving its headquarters to the city in four to five years.
So for Goyang, the 2021 Taekwondo Education and Industry Show is another step towards cementing itself as the martial art's new home.
