On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, South Korea and Japan are scheduled to hold a bilateral foreign ministers' meeting on Thursday, local time.
Seoul's foreign minister Chung Eui-yong and his Japanese counterpart Toshimitsu Motegi are likely to discuss conflicting historical and territorial issues.
Reuters reported on Wednesday that Chung hoped for progress with Japan to end a dispute that has led to tit-for-tat trade restrictions.
They last met in May, but couldn't narrow their differences on issues regarding wartime sex slavery and forced labor victims.
