U.S. Presidential candidate Joe Biden has picked his running mate for the 2020 election Senator Kamala Harris making her the first black and South Asian American woman on a major U.S. party's presidential ticket.
In a statement released within the past hour, the Democratic presumptive nominee said he needed "someone working alongside him who is smart, tough and ready to lead."
Choosing Harris also provides some generational diversity to Biden, who if elected would be the oldest president-elect in U.S. history.
Born to Jamaican and Indian immigrants, 55-year-old Harris is the only Black woman in the Senate.
She was elected as the junior Senator from California in 2016 after serving as the state's Attorney General.
