Foreign Correspondents Ep.40
President Moon's first Korea-U.S. summit
The first Korea-U.S. summit under the Moon Jae-in administration is scheduled to take place on June 29 and 30. Some of the key topics of discussion are expected to be strengthening the alliance, finding ways to resolve North Korea's nuclear issue, and realizing peace on the Korean Peninsula. However, Pyongyang's continual military provocations and the ongoing controversy surrounding Seoul's deployment of the U.S. anti-missile system THAAD are expected to ruffle some feathers. Not only that, the recent death of American college student Otto Warmbier, who was detained in North Korea, is also expected to add to the list of difficult topics of discussion. What results will this first encounter between President Moon and Trump yield?
ROK-U.S. alliance

Korea and the U.S. signed a historic treaty in October 1953. The Mutual Defense Treaty put in place a military alliance with Washington that has lasted to this today. The treaty was to act as a deterrent against war, and it allowed South Korea to focus more economic development with greatly enhanced defense capabilities backed by the U.S. How to further strengthen the alliance is expected to be a topic of discussion during the upcoming Korea-U.S. summit. Ahead of the meeting, we look back at the history and significance behind the alliance and where it's headed in the future.
