Foreign Correspondents Ep.27
Korea and Japan rocked by political scandals
Choi Soon-sil is now a name that has become all too familiar to the Korean public. As a close confidante of former president Park Geun-hye for some four decades, Choi has been accused of meddling in state affairs and accepting bribes from some of the country's largest conglomerates. The scandal eventually led to the ouster of Park. Meanwhile, over in Japan, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is also facing one of the biggest political crises since taking office. His approval ratings have been plunging due to a scandal involving a right-wing affiliated school operator Morimoto Gakuen and its ties with First Lady Akie Abe.
Corruption scandals by people closest to power
Korea has a long history of former presidents being embroiled in political scandals caused by those closest to them. Former presidents Kim Young-sam and Kim Dae-jung issued public apologies over corruption scandals involving their sons. The next presidents Roh Moo-hyun and Lee Myung-bak saw their older brothers sentenced to prison for bribery. This problem isn't unique to Korea. The mayor of Tianjin, close to Chinese President Xi Jinping, former U.S. vice president Dick Cheney, and three of Brazil's leaders have also landed in hot water due to high-profile political scandals. This week, we sit down to talk about scandals stemming from those closest to power and what can be done to prevent them.
