Korea has achieved remarkable economic growth based on an export-oriented economy. The country’s global competitiveness in the manufacturing sector shot up after high value added industries like shipbuilding, LCD and semiconductor started growing the economy in unprecedented speed.
However, the global manufacturing market has also been changing in the wake of the global financial crisis. Companies are starting to focus on creating jobs rather than focusing on efficiency while manufacturing powerhouses are turning their course to strengthen their own domestic operations.
What direction should Korea’s manufacturing industry take? Korea’s manufacturing sector not only has to survive the ever intensifying competition from overseas but is also burdened with having to address the serious domestic problem of having to cope with a dip in population. We visit small and mid-sized companies around the country to find out what they are doing to survive in this ever competitive industry. We also talk to experts to come up with measures to become more competitive in the global market.
