Ep.283 Nuclear threats grow amid geopolitical tensions

U.S. President Joe Biden has walked away from his campaign promise that the sole purpose of nuclear arsenal should be to deter nuclear attacks. This leaves open the option to use nuclear weapons in response to non-nuclear threats such as chemical, cyber and conventional attacks. Biden’s policy shift comes amid Russia’s threat of nuclear attack on Ukraine, North Korea’s resumed nuclear activity and China’s nuclear expansion. While the world is concerned about Russia’s potential use of nuclear weapons, Europe is considering increasing its stockpile of iodine pills which can protect the body from the harmful effects of radiation. Meanwhile, North Korea test-fired an ICBM last month, ending its four-year moratorium on long-range testing. The regime also condemned the upcoming South Korea-U.S. joint military drills, saying they could result in an escalation of tensions and lead to a nuclear war. In this week’s edition of Foreign Correspondents, we sit down with our panel of journalists to discuss the looming possibility of nuclear war.
