Moles live underground with their strong teeth and front paws. And a robot that mimicked the characteristics of moles has been developed. On this week’s #Lab_Tube, we look into the Urban Robotics Laboratory of KAIST, or Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, which developed Mole-bot, by mimicking the strong incisors and unique scapula of moles. Mole-bot can be used for the exploration of planets or extreme areas. Thanks to the sensor system and algorithm that the research team has developed, the location of the robot can be found even when it is underground. Moreover, the research team has strived hard to develop diversified robots including the ones for special situations and a mobile robot, SLAM. We introduce the Urban Robotics Laboratory of KAIST, which has paved a new pathin the aerospace field based on its own advanced technologies.

A lot of countries have promoted lunar missions in the 21st century and many researches have been carried out in Korea as well. On this week’s #Hash_Tech, we look into the rise of KPLO, or Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter, which is Korea’s first lunar probe. It looks similiar to satellites, but it has implemented a lot of core technologies. It can explore the moon with three different cameras and the filmed images can be send immediately to the Earth through the internet connectivity in space. Also, among different transfer trajectories, ballistic lunar transfer trajectory has been introduced. It takes a long period of time and it is difficult to control. However, it enables more studies by consuming less fuel, so it is expected to provide a new discovery in the moon. We look into the ongoing development of KPLO, which will lead the domestic field of space exploration.

Along with the growing expectations on the aerospace industry, the related technologies have also garnered a lot of attention. On this week’s #BizTech_Brunch, we explore the development and outlook for the aerospace technologies. The aerospace industry, which was led by the government, has recently achieved growth due to the efforts made by the private businesses. Korea Aerospace University developed a solar-powered unmanned aerial vehicle. And it achieved a national record for the longest continuous flight at a low altitude. The research team is planning to improve the performances of the vehicle so that it can replace the works of satellites including ocean surveillance, forest fire observation and monitoring of the ecosystem. Moreover, the Korea Aerospace Research Institute developed a solar-powered unmanned aerial vehicle and it is the world's third vehicle to enter the stratospheric altitude. Drones have been applied to people’s daily lives, including the drones for the prevention of forest destruction and firefighting drones. We explore the aerospace technologies, which have achieved accelerated growth thanks to the researches and investment from the private sector.
