The Czech Republic is a comics powerhouse where Krtek and Pat & Mat were born. Czech comics contain the present and past of the country. The history of Czech comics truly began after Czechoslovakia declared independence from Austria-Hungary in 1918. However, political cartoons were banned only 20 years after independence when Nazi Germany annxed Czechoslovakia. After the start of the communist regime, Czech comics again suffered from strong censorship. The comics industry was revived in November 1989, when the “Velvet Revolution”, a non-violent struggle for democracy, took place. Czech Comics reached a golden age in the 2000s and were introduced to Korea several times. This spring, the Czech Centre Seoul also held a Czech Comics Exhibition. We’ll discuss the attractiveness and strength of Czech comics, and ways for Korea and the Czech Republic to cooperate in the area with Michal Emanovský, director of the Czech Centre Seoul.
