June is Memorial Month in Korea, and Koreans remember and honor the fallen heroes in many different ways. With 2020 marking the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War, the Seoul National Cemetery organized a special contest to once again remember the sacrifices of the fallen heroes. The history of the Korean War is widely known to the public - the war broke out when forces from North Korea launched a surprise attack on the South, the war occurred between the people of the same roots and more. However, there are actually numerous stories, associated with each fallen hero, unknown to the public. Let’s learn more about those stories through the Seoul National Cemetery’s content contest.

14-year old Asia Campbell goes by the nickname of ‘the little ambassador.’ Last week, she met Korean veterans that fought in the Korean War. This week, she connects live for a virtual interview with a Canadian veteran who fought in the Korean War Dennis Moore, now 89 years old. Moore was one of the few soldiers that played ice hockey for the first time in Korea. During the war, Canadian troops relieved their homesickness by playing hockey on the frozen Imjin River. Marking the 70th anniversary of the Korean War, Moore takes us to the time when he was dispatched to the Korean peninsula and tells us how he feels about the improvement Korea has made since the war.

Since 2019, the South Korean government started attaching nameplates on the houses of decorated Korean War veterans and their bereaved families. The nameplate, initially designed differently by each local government, has been remade with the same inscription and design. We visit a veteran’s resident that already earned the nameplate and a house soon to obtain one to the war heroes who share their memories of the Korean War and how they feel about receiving the nameplate.
