NOW Episode 59
8.15 by the Numbers

The independence and sovereignty of Korea was established on August 15, 1945. Under Japanese occupation, millions of Koreans were forcibly conscripted to provide labor, coerced into sexual slavery, stripped of their language and names, and killed for fighting for independence. In commemoration of the 74th anniversary of Korea’s Liberation Day, we look back on the past and present of Korea by the numbers.

8.15 by Sculpture

The "Statue of Peace," a statue of a young girl created to honor the victims of Japan’s wartime sexual slavery, was placed near the Japanese Embassy in Korea in 2011. Called "Soon-hee," it represents many different aspects and effects of the violence and exploitation experienced by the victims with its unevenly cut hair, bare unsettled feet, and clenched fist, for example. 8 years later in 2019, the statue was displayed at a Japanese art festival for the first time but was forcibly withdrawn 3 days later. Has Korea truly gained independence? Meet the sculptors of the statue – Kim Seo-kyung and Kim Woon-sung – and learn more about this ongoing story.
