The first collection of Acheulian handaxes in East Asia was excavated from Jeongok-ri in Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi-do Province in 1978. They are valuable artifacts that shed light on the stone tool manufacturing practices of early humans that continued on for a million years. More than 3,000 stone tools have been uncovered from the site since then over the course of 7 archaeological projects. Yeoncheon is taking people back in time, all the way to the Paleolithic Period, also known as the Old Stone Age, through the Yeoncheon Paleolithic Festival. It offers a special chance for visitors to try making handaxes and hunting tools from stones and barbecue meat directly over a fire. Participating in the festival are archaeologists from not only Korea, but also Germany, Portugal, Spain and more. We invite you to jump on the time machine for a special trip!

Various celebrations and festivities take place all over Korea every year on April 8 in the lunar calendar in time for Buddha’s Birthday, which fell on May 12 this year. The biggest event of them all would arguably be the Lotus Lantern Festival, where people carry and transport 100,000 lanterns in a parade. This tradition commenced back in the Silla Dynasty some 1,300 years ago, as a way to express admiration for the virtues and laudable deeds of the Buddha who has taught people to strive toward enlightenment by severing ignorance through the light of wisdom. The 3-hour lantern parade showcases lanterns in diverse shapes and sizes and they are truly a sight to behold.
