Celebrating Jeongwol Daeboreum
Jeongwol Daeboreum, observed on the fifteenth of the first month of the lunar new year, is one of the traditional holidays in Korea. Since long ago, various folk games and customs were enjoyed on this day to wish for happiness and well-being. Jwibulnori (swinging a can containing a flame), in particular, was played to ward off evil spirits and to get rid of pests, and daljip (sheaf) was burned to predict the success of the harvest. We take you to a Jeongwol Daeboreum festival the was organized for people to enjoy great festivities and wish for abundance and well-being in the new year.
It’s the back-to-school season, and all the students and their parents are busy preparing for the new school year! The most important item on the shopping list for the parents of first graders is none other than backpacks. There are many factors to consider: the weight, size, features and, of course, the price tag. We take you to a department store to meet young students and their parents crossing things off their back-to-school checklist. Middle and high school students, on the other hand, are busy shopping for school uniforms for the new school year. Many of them get the uniforms altered to express their individuality and sense of style, and we take you to get a glimpse of their back-to-school preparation process!
Tributes to Independence Activists
The year 1919 is remembered by Koreans as a tumultuous year of struggle and resistance. On March 1 that year, the Declaration of Independence was announced to the world and the independence movement was spurred as part of the efforts to protest against the Japanese occupation of Korea. A little over a month later on April 11, the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea was established in Shanghai, China for an organized anti-Japanese resistance movement. Now, a century later, Yu Gwan-sun who had courageously shouted, “Long live Korea,” with the Taegeukgi, the national flag of Korea, in her hand at the age of 16 has been brought to life through a graffiti, while Baekbeom Kim Gu, who organized the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea, and Ahn Jung-gu, who assassinated one of the key players in the exploitation of his motherland and its people, are presented as 3D figures. We take you to meet the people who are drawing attention to the great heroes who fought for the independence of Korea!
