When it is hot outside, everything turns tomato-red in Hwacheon, Gangwon-do Province. This year, as many as 150,000 visitors made their way to Hwacheon to take part in the Hwacheon Tomato Festival which celebrates its 16th anniversary. A wide variety of interesting events are held during the festival including a treasure hunt, tomato soccer and sliding. The festival makes use of low-grade tomatoes to promote locally produced tomatoes high in sugar content and rich in flavor and boost the income of farm households.
