South Korea-Japan trade spat has been prolonging for over two months, and the bilateral tensions continue to escalate. In response to Japan’s whitelist revision, South Korea took Japan out from its list of trusted trading partners and stated it would withdraw from GSOMIA. Tokyo meanwhile, has approved shipments of regulated materials, including photoresist and etching gas to Seoul three times since placing the export curbs. Experts perceive the moves as Japan’s way of making a case to defend itself when South Korea files a WTO complaint.
Economic uncertainties are mounting as Japan can deliberately place additional trade measures against South Korea anytime it wants.
