South Korea is mulling countermeasures against Japan's move. Seoul has designated 159 strategic items, which are highly dependent on Japanese imports under special management. It also vowed to achieve a stable supply of 100 key items without Japan's help. It plans to stabilize the production of some 20 key materials in chip and automotive sectors within a year and work on boosting domestic production of other 80 items within the next five years. Korean companies have guaranteed to cooperate on maintaining healthy supply-and-demand between businesses. Meanwhile, private banks have promised to fund small and mid-sized firms expected to take substantial damage by Japan's measures. South Korea is also mulling the possibility of whether to withdraw from GSOMIA with Japan.
