Episode 57 Exports restrictions, strained S. Korea-Japan ties

On July first, a day after the G20 Summit, Japan announced restrictions on exports to South Korea. Tokyo said it is revising its policy to curb exports of essential tech materials in producing TVs, smartphones‘ chips. The move is expected to damage domestic conglomerates as well as Japanese exporters. It could be read as Japan’s retaliatory measure against South Korean court’s ruling on forced labor victims. A trade war between the two nations could be in sight with South Korea hinting at a possible countermeasure to the export ban.

Meanwhile, leaders of teh U.S. and China have agreed to resume trade talks at the G20 Summit. But the truce isn't expected to be here for long, as experts believe president Trump might restart the trade war whenever he feels a need for a push to gain the upper hand in 2020 presidential election. This week’s episode takes a deep dive into the trade stories of the four countries that are repeatedly entangled with diplomatic and economic disputes and truce.
