U.S. President Donald Trump paid a four-day visit to Japan on May 25th, the first state visit in Japan since the Reiwa Era began. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe showed the world his close friendship with Trump throughout the successful public meetings he had arranged for the U.S. leader, including watching a sumo game together, dining with the Japanese Emperor, and golfing. In the end, the two leaders have confirmed close cooperation regarding North Korea’s denuclearization and pledged full cooperation in solving North Korea’s abduction of Japanese people.
Despite emphasizing strong and cooperative bilateral ties, Trump maintained a firm stance on scrapping the U.S.-Japan trade gap. He said the U.S. is suffering insurmountable unfairness in trade with Japan, and that he expects some good news to be announced in August to make things right. Through active discussions, we will find out what each side had to take away from the summit.
Other stories on the agenda include the resignation of UK Prime Minister Theresa May, the WHO’s decision to classify gaming disorder as an illness, and the historical South Korean victory at Cannes Film Festival.
