Japan's new imperial era of 'Reiwa' started at midnight on May 1st. It began with the coronation of emperor Naruhito, the son of Japan's 125th emperor Akihito who led the 'Heisei' era for the past 31 years. The former emperor's abdication led to a nationwide ten-day holiday in Japan, and the festive mood is in the air everywhere. The Japanese people are welcoming Naruhito because he is widely considered as a pacifist and a supporter of the common people. Social mood is being created to sever from the past and take a leap forward with the ascension of the new emperor. However, there are concerns whether Naruhito could be compatible with prime minister Abe who is pushing conservative policies. The main focus would be to see how the two figures get along in the wake of the Abe cabinet trying to revise the country's war-renouncing Constitution.
Other stories on the agenda are the yellow umbrella protests in Hong Kong, Iran's reaction to U.S. sanctions on its oil imports, and more.
