Episode 37
A divided Venezuela.. A divided international community?

The internal politics of Venezuela, which is suffering from economic hardships due to extreme inflation, has been divided. President Maduro, who succeeded in being re-elected as president is being pressured to step down from power after opposition leader Guaido was sworn in as interim president on January 23rd. While the U.S. and other European nations are supporting Guaido, China and Russia are strongly supporting President Maduro.
Meanwhile, Guaido has appealed for humanitarian assistance from the international community to resolve a serious food and medicine shortage in Venezuela. While the U.S., Canada, and the EU have promised to provide aid, President Maduro is refusing to accept outside help. His argument is that foreign aid will lead to interference in domestic affairs.
On this week's [The Point: World Affairs], we analyze why Venezuela, one of the world's largest oil producers, has fallen into such severe economic meltdown, the direction of the political turmoil in which two presidents exist, and its impact on the international community.
