Exploring the potential abuse of advanced IT technology in military sector
It has been reported that Beijing Institute of Technology admitted a batch of students into their smart weapons development program as China strives to become the leader in the development of smart technologies utilized in the military sector. What's more, China has been focusing on building a national AI platform in collaboration with major Chinese IT firms like Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent. With an attempt to assassinate Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro with a drone back in August, the weaponization of drones have already become a reality. What's more, there's increasing concern that creating autonomous weapons can give birth to so-called 'killer robots' that can cause mass catastrophe. On this week's <The Point: World Affairs>, we explore the current state of cutting-edge technology being incorporated into the military sector and discuss potential avenues to check and regulate AI weaponization that could pose a deadly threat to humans.
