Gesture recognition technology has garnered a lot of attention along with the spread of COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of having contacts with a controller, users can interact with various devices only with the movements and gestures. A lot of people avoid to touch kiosks because of the fear of the spread of the pandemic. And a virtual touch technology, which can control different devices only with hand gestures, has been developed. The virtual touch technology can recognize the eyes and fingertips of a user through a 3D camera. And it can recognize the object that the user is pointing at. LiDAR sensor has received a lot of attention as it can play a role as an eye of autonomous vehicles. It is a motion recognition technology that can recognize fine movements of hands with the speed of 70 times per second. So users can control the screen without actually touching it. This is a studio located inside a domestic university. When wearing headphones with an embedded sensor and entering a studio, A vision tracking-based sensing system can recognize the movements of a user. When the technology is applied to exhibition and concert halls, the location of a user can be recognized in a large space. So the desired information or realistic sound can be provided according to different locations. We introduce non-contact gesture technologies which have achieved continuous growth by minimizing the contact, preventing the spread of COVID-19 and promoting differentiated technologies and contents.

People’s daily lives have shifted from offline to online spaces as part of an effort to prevent further spread of COVID-19. And online networking technology has been applied to various fields including teleconference, remote medical treatment and distance learning. Education is one of the areas that has actively introduced online networking technology. Teachers are having online classes at an empty classroom. In the morning, students sit in front of tablet PCs instead of getting ready for school. Distance learning is not new to the students anymore. A two-way communication with students is possible while having an online class, so teachers and students can exchange feedback in real time. However, parents have raised concerns over the online classes. And the school has made a lot of efforts to alleviate the worries by emphasizing the strength of online classes. The spread of COVID-19 has changed the commuting culture of office workers. A lot of companies have implemented online networking technologies to help employees work remotely at home. People can work anytime, at any place, so it provides improved accessibility. We look into online networking technologies which have overcome the limitations of time and space.

Drive-through service is one of the measures that have been introduced to stimulate the shrinking consumption amid the COVID-19 spread. It is one of the untact trends that can conduct exchanges without leaving one’s car. The breathalyzer tests in the crackdown on drunk drivers have been stopped because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Considering the increasing number of people who drink and drive, the police has introduced a “drive-through” crackdown. A long S-shaped passage is created on the road and cars can just pass by the passage for the drunk driving crackdown. After checking the driving patterns, the suspicious cars are selected and they take a sobriety test. As drivers don’t have to blow into the breathalyser, it has been considered as an hygienic drive-through measure. And a temporary drive-through civil affairs center has been built by an office of education in Daejeon. It is to help people deal with the civil affairs documents. When a person visits the drive-through center located in the parking lot of the office of eduction, he can wait inside a car and the person in charge can check the documents. A musical instrument library located in Osan City has introduced a drive-through method to lend the musical instrument, considering the decreasing number of library users because of the COVID-19 spread. People can make an application in advance through a website. Also, they can lend the instrument simply by filling out the form and showing their ID card. Aside from drive-through, a walk-through service is also provided for people who are difficult to bring their own cars. And they can take books from the library when using drive-through or walk-through services. We report on drive-through services which have been introduced to better deal with the rapid changes taking place in the society along with the spread of COVID-19.
