Indonesia endured through invasions by western power nations in the 16th century and was conquered by the Netherlands for a very long period of 300 years. During WWII, it was occupied by Japan and finally found independence with Japan’s defeat on August 17th, 1945. But this didn’t last long as the Netherlands reinvaded Indonesia, which led to a war for independence spanning over 4 years and 5 months. Among the many freedom fighters sacrificed, there was a Korean person called Yang Chil-sung who had become a prison watchman in Indonesia during Japanese occupation. This week we’ll meet with Ambassador of Indonesia to S. Korea, Umar Hadi, to talk about how Indonesia claimed its independence and its 5 founding principles of the nation, Pancasila.
