Similar to Korea, March is a special month for the people of Bangladesh as they commemorate the history of independence. Bangladesh became part of East Pakistan in 1947 as East Began gained independence from British rule. However, political, economic and social discrimination as well as various disparate elements caused Bangladesh to seek independence from East Pakistan. Particularly, the movement to protect their mother tongue, Bengali, became the trigger that started the independence movement on March 26, 1971. After nine months of fighting, Bangladesh finally gained independence on Dec. 16 the same year. This March is especially meaningful as it marks the 100th birth anniversary of Bangladesh’s founding father and independence leader. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Keeping with his spirit of creating an “inclusive democratic society,” Bangladesh is contributing to world peace through policies to accept refugees. We will share Bangladesh’s intense independence story and hear of hopes for intimate bilateral communication and cooperation with Ambassador Abida ISLAM.
