On “The Diplomat” this week, we meet Ambassador of Russia to S. Korea, Andrey Kulik.
2020 marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between S. Korea and Russia.
Since establishing diplomatic relations on September 30, 1990, the two countries have maintained close ties with exchanges in a variety of fields such as diplomacy, security and economy.
The two countries’ special friendship extends further back in history.
At the end of the Joseon Dynasty, Emperor Gojong felt threatened for his life by the Japanese and took refuge at the Russian legation in what’s called Agwan Pacheon.
Looking around the old Russian legation site, where only the tower remains, we will look back at the long relationship between the two countries.
Ambassador Kulik also thanked the S. Korean Navy’s support for the memorial for soldiers who died on the Varyag during the Battle of Jemulpo, marking the beginning of the Russo-Japanese War.
The two countries are preparing a variety of events to commemorate the 30th anniversary of bilateral ties.
The two sides will promote more active exchanges through events such as forums and business meetings for economic exchange and mutual visits by artists.
We will meet Ambassador Andrey Kulik who is in the midst of all of these activities and hear the special stories about S. Korea and Russia’s relationship.
