On “The Diplomat” this week, we meet Ambassador of Georgia to S. Korea, Otar Berdzenishvili. As a country with over 8,000 years of winemaking history, Georgia has over 500 different types of wine and ferments wine using the ancient Qvevri method with pots rather than oak barrels. The usage of pots is similar to Korea’s own gimjang culture and its uniqueness and heritage has been acknowledged through its designation as a UNESCO intangible heritage. Ambassador Berdzenishvili showed great pride in Georgia’s winemaking, introducing Georgian wine that pairs well with Korean cuisine. Korea’s wine market has been growing and with both Koreans and Georgians great lovers of wine, we will also hear about bilateral tourism and person exchange as well as plans to increase cooperation using wine as the medium.
