The Korean government's "New Southern Policy" aims to better connect Korea to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) grouping and expand the economic influence of Asia's fourth-largest economy in the region home to more than half a billion people. Then, which ASEAN country first established diplomatic with Korea? It's the Philippines, composing over 7,000 islands. The Philippines was also the first Asian country to send combat troops to South Korea during the Korean War, establishing a brotherhood forged in blood. Today, approx. 60,000 Filipinos reside in South Korea as students, workers, missionaries or spouses of Korean nationals, while around 100,000 Koreans live in the Philippines.
With this year marking the 70th anniversary of Korea-Philippines diplomatic ties, President Moon Jae-in and President Rodrigo Duterte designated 2019 as the "Year of Mutual Exchanges." Therefore, "The Diplomat" invites Philippine Ambassador to Korea, Raul S. Hernandez to take a glimpse into the bright future of our cooperative relationship.
