Latvia is a country in northeastern Europe, sandwiched in the middle of the three Baltic states and between Europe and Russia. Being a strategic foothold, geographically, the country suffered foreign reign throughout its history and finally declared independence in 1918. This year marks the centenary of Latvia, and celebrations are taking place all over the world to honor the country's journey to independence and freedom.
Also, trade volume and tourism between Korea and Latvia have been constantly on the rise since establishing diplomatic ties in 1991, and the country's capital, Riga, is home to a nascent but growing startup scene, where local entrepreneurs have global ambitions.
This week on "The Diplomat," we sit down with Latvia's first resident Ambassador to Korea Peteris Vaivars to talk about the current status of the Korea-Latvia relationship, historical similarities, and Ambassador's plans to further improve the two countries' relations.
