Engel's coefficient, reflecting changing consumption trend

Korea's household spending on food as a proportion of total expenses, known as the Engel's coefficient, has recently reached a 17-year high. The Engel's coefficient has been considered as an indicator of the country's standard of living. And the rise of vegetable prices caused by the cold wave hit the country last winter has been one of the main causes of the rise in Engel's coefficient. For the past few years, household incomes have remained stagnant while the food prices have soared sharply. As a result, the Engel's coefficient has continuously increased. Also, a growing number of single-person households and changes in consumption trends according to different lifestyles of consumers can be considered as another reason for an increase of the Engel's coefficient. The consumption trend that puts emphasis on the taste and quality instead of price has given rise to the Engel's coefficient. In order to cope with the changes in consumption trend, the distribution sector has expanded the premium food markets. In the past, Engel's coefficient used to be considered as a key indicator on income distribution and poverty.
