Japan has reiterated its false claims over Korea’s easternmost islands of Dokdo in its annual defense white paper for the 17th straight year. Earlier, the country labeled the island as Japanese territory on the Olympic torch relay map on the Tokyo Olympics website. Meanwhile, UNESCO has expressed “strong regret” over Japan’s failure to keep its promise to acknowledge the use of forced labor of Koreans at its Meiji-era industrial sites that were listed as World Heritage Sites in 2015. A travel map on the UK government website has stopped using the term “Sea of Japan” to refer to the body of water between Japan and the Korean Peninsula. In this week’s edition of Foreign Correspondents, we sit down with our panel of journalists to discuss Japan’s repeated unsuccessful attempts to whitewash history and how they are being perceived by the international community.
