Foreign Correspondents Ep.240
Calls grow louder to cancel Tokyo Olympics

With just weeks until the Tokyo Olympics, the U.S. State Department issued a “Do Not Travel” advisory to Japan, warning even fully vaccinated travelers might be at increased risk for getting COVID-19 variants. Meanwhile, calls to cancel the once-delayed Games are growing in Japan due to concerns with the pandemic, with one of the official sponsors, the Asahi Shimbun, calling for the event to be scrapped. Over 90 percent of COVID-19 cases in Japan are the U.K. variant, with the Indian variant spreading quickly. While canceling the Olympics is expected to take a US$ 17 billion toll on the Japanese economy, the fate of the Games still hangs in the balance. In this week’s edition of Foreign Correspondents, we sit down with our panel of journalists to discuss what is fuelling the debate over canceling the event less than two months before the opening ceremony.
