This year marks the 41st anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Movement, a landmark moment in South Korea’s transition to democracy. Foreign correspondents including Jürgen Hinzpeter and Norman Thorpe played a key role in informing the rest of the world of the uprising in Gwangju and the military’s violent crackdown on protesters. In this week’s edition of Foreign Correspondents, we sit down with our panel of journalists to shed light on foreign press coverage of the incident and discuss what the movement means in today’s world, including its similarities to the ongoing anti-coup protests in Myanmar.
