Home to leading COVID-19 vaccine makers such as Moderna, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson, the U.S. is quickly expanding its political and economic influence in the global arena. Last week, U.S. President Joe Biden said the country will become an “arsenal of vaccines” for the rest of the world, in a speech marking his first 100 days of presidency. Earlier, he expressed a willingness to send vaccines abroad once U.S. supply is sufficient, with top priority given to its neighbors and key allies including Quad member states. China criticized the U.S. move, saying it is driven by geopolitical interests. In this week’s edition of Foreign Correspondents, we sit down with our panel of journalists to discuss the growing imbalance in the global vaccine rollout and possible motives behind the U.S. vaccine sharing plan.
