Foreign Correspondents Ep.232
Seoul-Tokyo ties remain strained over distorted textbooks

The U.S. Biden administration has emphasized the need for mending the Seoul-Tokyo ties that have been weakened over a series of historical issues. Amid signs of thawing relations, including a visit by a Korean foreign ministry official to Japan, the Japanese government approved new textbooks containing Japan’s territorial claims over South Korea’s Dokdo Island.

The textbooks’ description of the coercive nature of Japan’s wartime sexual enslavement has also been minimized. The South Korean government strongly protested to Japan’s move, calling for an immediate correction. In this week’s edition of Foreign Correspondents, we sit down with our panel of journalists to discuss what the latest developments could mean for the future of South Korea-Japan ties.
