Korea’s total population shrank for the first time last year, with the number of deaths surpassing births. Signs of a dwindling population have also been observed in China, the world's most populous country. Experts say at this rate, India could surpass China to be the most populous country by 2024. Researchers at the University of Washington forecast that global population will peak in 2064 before dropping to 8.8 bil. by 2100 due to falling fertility rates. In particular, populations in Asia and Southern Europe are expected to be more than halved. In this week’s edition of Foreign Correspondents, we sit down with our panel of journalists to discuss factors causing low fertility, the impact of a declining population on economic growth and global security, and how countries are tackling demographic issues.
