Small business owners are being hit hard by the ongoing pandemic, with many stores in Seoul’s major commercial districts shutting down after failing to pay rent. A Korean lawmaker has proposed a bill that would force property owners to waive or reduce rent for businesses affected by COVID-19 restrictions, sparking a heated debate. The Korean government is discussing a commercial rent subsidy that will be provided directly to small business owners, as part of the third round of emergency relief funds to be rolled out in Jan. In this week’s edition of Foreign Correspondents, we sit down with our panel of journalists to explore rent relief programs for small businesses available in different parts of the world.
