Foreign Correspondents Ep.198
Korea-Japan relations ahead of Korea’s Liberation Day

A South Korean court order to seize assets of Japan’s Nippon Steel to compensate Korean victims to wartime forced labor took effect as of Aug. 4. Earlier, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga had warned of serious consequences if the seizure is carried out. Possible retaliatory measures being discussed include visa restrictions and tighter customs and export controls. Meanwhile, the South Korean government said it remains committed to resolving the issue through diplomatic channels. But Seoul also made it clear that it may terminate GSOMIA, a bilateral intel-sharing pact with Tokyo, whenever it sees fit. In this week’s edition of Foreign Correspondents, we sit down with our panel of journalists to discuss the latest developments in South Korea-Japan relations ahead of the 75th anniversary of Korea’s independence from Japan’s colonial rule.
