The novel coronavirus is rattling the whole world. This infection, which broke out in December 2019, has now spread to more than two dozen countries, including South Korea, Japan, the U.S., Australia and Canada. It has similarities to another disease that hit the world hard in 2003, SARS, but its infection rate is known to be faster. It took SARS around eight months to infect some 8,000 people, but the new coronavirus has taken less than two months. Emergency measures taken by the South Korean government include operating a 24-hour emergency response system and investigating all people arriving in the country from Wuhan. Still, the outbreak has dealt a blow to the travel and accommodation industries, and has impacted venues that attract large groups of people such as performance halls and amusement parts.
This week, Foreign Correspondents looks at the spread of the new coronavirus and its impact.
