The past, present and future of international broadcasting
2019 marks the 20th anniversary of Arirang World's first overseas broadcast. In August 12, 1998, Arirang TV was broadcast outside of South Korea for the first time, being aired in the Asia-Pacific region via satellite signal. In the following two decades, Ariraing World has grown to become a reputable international broadcaster representing South Korea. Countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany are also home to renowned international broadcasters, that have served many roles which include supporting national interests, providing news services for expats abroad, as well as promoting culture. But, can they continue to stay relevant and fulfill its objectives in the era of new media, where the advent of the Internet has resulted in many people consuming news via portal sites and social media? In this week's edition of 'Foreign Correspondents', we sit down with our panel of journalists to talk about the present role and future outlook of international broadcasters, in commemoration of Arirang World's 20th anniversary.
