Foreign Correspondents Ep.144 - The meaning of merit and patriotism
June is Memorial Month in South Korea
Reflecting on the meaning of patriotism

June is Memorial Month in South Korea, with Memorial Day being marked on June 6 and the anniversary of the Korean War on June 25. South Korea has gone through a turbulent history in the last century, ranging from Japan's colonial occupation, to the Korean War and the country's democratization movements, where many sacrifices were made by various individuals. These heroes and patriots have been recognized as persons of national merit by the South Korean government, who receive many benefits in education, employment and healthcare both for themselves as well as their families. During his commemorative address on Memorial Day, President Moon Jae-in said he would redouble his administration's efforts to provide adequate care for persons of national merit, saying that Korea was built upon the foundation of their sacrifice. However, this has also led to controversies on who should be classified as national heroes under what criteria, and how they should be rewarded. In this week's edition of 'Foreign Correspondents', we sit down with our panelists to talk about all of these issue and more, as we reflect on the true meaning of patriotism.
