Foreign Correspondents Ep.137 - Filial piety and elderly care
Changes to South Korea's tradition of filial piety
and growing concerns over the burden of elderly care

May is commonly known as family month in South Korea, with Children's Day, Parents; Day and Husband and Wife Day all in the monthly calendar. Gifts are often provided on Parents' Day, with South Korea's long-held Confucian tradition of 'Hyo' obligating children to look after their elders. However, times are now changing, and while it was common for children to take care of their elderly parents' in the 1980s and the 1990s, more young people in recent years now believe that the burden of care should lie with the state rather than individual families, leading to inter-generational conflict over issues such as inheritance and support allowances. In this week's edition of 'Foreign Correspondents', we sit down with our panel of journalists to talk about all of these issue and more, amid changing perceptions of the country's 'Hyo' tradition.
